Over 250 children and young people attended Mencap’s Summer Programmes this year with all schemes coming to a spectacular end at our Superheroes Family Day for Learning Disability Week. Here we spoke with one of the parents of a young person who has attended the Mencap Summer Programmes for a number of years. Here is her story…..
Jonathan has been coming to the Mencap Summer Schemes for at least the past five years. He doesn’t say much about anything but I would say this past three years he has enjoyed it more and more. Before that he didn’t want to go but the past 3 years he has. I think he has got a bit older and especially this year I think the venues have been a better environment for the young people than in previous years. Usually every other year we go on holiday but this year we weren’t anywhere so the summer scheme is bit of break for all of us.
I don’t know what I would change about the schemes if anything. I think this new venue is great and feels like a freer environment and that is something that Jonathan has responded well to. I would like Jonathan to be more active and get involved a bit more and his big brother Joshua has encouraged him to become more independent at home and do more things for himself which is great.
Joshua is always there when we need him which is why I would say he’s not only my superhero but Jonathan’s too. Of course they muck about and fight at times but I would be lost without him and Jonathan would be lost without him. At the end of June Joshua won an award for Heart of Gold in the Community and he has volunteered with Mencap too.
I am very proud of Jonathan and how far he has come in the last few years and proud of his brother too for all the support he has given him. Jonathan has enjoyed coming to the schemes every morning this year and we would definitely come back for the summer schemes next year.
